Experience In Chengdu
I came to Chengdu on 21st September 2015 to join Student Exchange program. I came with 10 friends and 2 teachers. Some of my friends are tourism major, English major and Mandarin major. Our teachers are from tourism major. My first opinion is the people in Chengdu are very nice and welcoming us warmly. They are students and teachers from Chengdu Textile College. In Chengdu Textile College we live in the foreigner teacher and student’s boarding house. It’s quite nice, and big. And I think there’s nothing wrong with the room and we live there happily.
We feel very pleased to joined that program. During the Student Exchange Program, we enjoyed the program there. There is a Chinese Calligraphy class, Chinese painting class, making video class, and many more. I’m so happy to know everything that I can’t find in Indonesia. Especially the Chinese Calligraphy class. We learned how to write our Chinese name, how to use the equipment for Chinese Calligraphy class.
Beside the classes that we joined, we also had time to go to some tourism destination. We went to Giant Panda Base, Jinli Street, Luodai market, Xipu street and museum. We had so much fun there and I think Chinese partner and Indonesian Students are getting closer everyday which is good for SV UGM and CDTC’s relationship.
Over all, I feel very happy to have nice new friends like them. Although during this program there’s some trouble but we can make it through together, I hope our relationship will be better and last forever.
-Fadlila Tasya, Mandarin Department Vocational College UGM
There are many experience happened in this program. First time I arrived in Chengdu I was little bit confused. I do not know anything about Chengdu and China. Right after pick up from airport I ate dinner for first time in Chengdu. I do not think that the food is delicious, because the food is spicy and the taste is too strong for my tongue. My friend told me that the food is like India food. After that is rehearsal for opening ceremony. I and all other Indonesian student do not have any idea about performance will be performed. Everything is so sudden. We only practice a traditional song, but the between Indonesian committee and China committee is miss communication. We got the information about performance is about 3 days before we go to china, and we don not know that the committee in China write that we will perform saman danc, we know about this information 1 day before going to China. We don not prepared that dance yet, and it is impossible to memorized saman dance in one days. So we just perform anything we have. I am glad that all people enjoyed our performance.
The other memorable thing is we have to perform fashion show. For me my self it is a nightmare. I am not kind of people who can walk in front of many people. First I came to the place for fashion show I just thought what we will do here, because I have no idea that we will doing fashion show at that place. It is like a place for professional models, and I am completely not a model. At that time, we are not prepare any costume for fashion show. I saw the India people, they really model look, very tall, beautifull, and well prepare. We are so small compare to them. We decided that we will wear our dance costumefull with accesories and everything, we just do our best. Although we cannot be the best, but we try to not looked shameful in front of many people, and we bring aur university and country name, so we do our best. My teacher said that our performance is better than our rehearsal, it make me glad.
Visit Chengdu Breeding Base of Giant Panda is great experience too. I never see panda before, and I am glad we can see them closely. Next day is performed for welcome party. We perform our traditional dance that we had practice more than a month before went to China. I am confident about our performance, because we practice a lot. I saw the people give us applause after dance is the best thing for me. I cannot dance at all, I do not like dance, but for the first time I can enjoyed dancing. I am glad people appreciate our performance.
We learned about writing a calligraphy and paiting a Chinese painting, for me it is difficult but that was very fun. Visiting a museums was great program, because I can learned about many things there. A history, art, and many more. Overall I like the activitie and thankful to be part of this great program.

Day 1, Monday, October 5th, 2015
Today is the first day of the formal living in Indonesia, breakfast is very different from China, in China breakfast is generally soy bean milk twisted dough strips, so I’m not used to it. Indonesia’s teachers are very good, but I don’t like to write paper, ha ha ha ha… Indonesia’s a lot of things are cheap, especially the mango cheaper than China’s, also very sweet, I hope every day can eat mangoes. Indonesia is very hot, especially at noon, but I can accept, looking forward to tomorrow’s agenda.
Sherro, Chengdu Textile College
The second day we arrived in Indonesia, also we bring the China’s Student to stay here until two weeks. We had the opening ceremony, it was nice opening with the traditional dance from Yogyakarta, and the dancer are my friends too. After the opening we have some meeting of making paper and it was surprised all the students, because we got random partners in this session. I am just worried with my friends who always with me, because she didn’t even known her new partner before, but it is ok she can understood. And about the dinner it was really nice because finally I eat some of Indonesia’s foods, after long time we went to china and feel not really good with the taste of China’s food, it is very very spicy.

In the night, we went to Purawisata for had dinner and saw Ramayana Ballet performance. The show was very adorable. My Chinese partners interested with the story of Rama and Shinta. They always ask me about the cast of that story. Edward and Cloris really adore the little monkey or Hanoman’s army. The little monkey was very cute.
All audiences really like the show, even my Chinese friends cannot stop praise the dancers. After the show end, we took photo together with the main cast of that show.
I felt happy today because I could spent my time with my student exchange mates. Hopefully, tomorrow will be greater and happier than today. That’s all, thank you. Xie Xie.

Day 3, Wednesday, October 7th, 2015
I had activities with my Chinese friends. Those activities were going to Borobudur Temple and Shopping. It was my third time to visit Borobudur, so I already know what I would see there, just rocks and souvenir stuff. It was a hot day. I even brought umbrella to cover my body, but I didn’t use it because one of Chinese friend needed it more than me. What I did there were seeing scenery, listening to tour guide, and sun bath of course. After visiting a bunch of rocks, We had lunch and took a rest in our room. After dinner, we went shopping at Ambarrukko Plaza. For your information, I hate shopping. Why? Because I am poor. I just watched my Chinese friends bought a lot of stuff. Some of them don’t like shopping, they wanted to go to landmarks of Yogyakarta. After this shopping activities, I went to my dormitory and wrote this paper.
-Ferdian Indrapradana, English Department, Vocational College UGM
Let me talk about Borobudur, a pilgrimige site. Today we had honor to visit there, it was a nightmare to get up at 5:30, we took a nap on the bus, so I regretted to miss the scenery along the road. We arrived at it about 9:00. I felt burning when I stood under the sunlight just like I was a vampire. Anyway, we were asked to wear batik clothes, we later learnt that it was a way to show our respects to the heaven holy place. By the way, i like that pattern of that kind of clothes. I feel so pious because I am a Buddhism, so this trip means a lot to me, I got peace there. In addition, the story of Prince Shiddharta (“Sakyamuni” in Chinese) in here was same with Chinese. So I can feel plenty of things not just only take photos, it is a valuable building of Buddhism civilization. And I would like to quote a sentence of Buddhism as the ending: To do no evil, to do only good, to purify the will, is the doctrine of all Buddhas.
-Edward, Chengdu Textile College
Day 4, Thursday, October 8, 2015
Today we just have some lessons in the classroom, in the first we were in divided 12 groups, and we should talk about each other , I think it’s very embarrassed to us, I am the only stranger in this group we don’t know each other. However, the ice is break by a smile and then they ask me some questions after that the Miss asked us to have a drawing to describe one thing to our partners then we begin the introduce for the pictures, from the discussion we talked about the some differences between Indonesia and China, it’s very pleasant talking with the new friends. Then we have the Indonesia language lesson, and our teachers are our partners, it’s really a lively and interest lesson I have!
In the afternoon, we learned the traditional dance Saman, although it’s very tired but I am enjoyed it and I studied the culture in Yogyakarta too. I am very interested in the Indonesia cultural.
-Hayley, Chengdu Textile College
Time pass away, It’s already 5 days our Chinese students came to Indonesia and every day is full and over my expectation. Actually I do love it!
As to today, in the morning and afternoon, we just follow our schedule. After Saman dance, some of us go out for dinner, include me. What a surprise thing happened. I met Beita. She does her part-time job at here. And we knew each other at the Tourism Program Meeting room and we also belong to No.5 group. I never thought we can met again, I was sooooooo happy! Because I do enjoy and love this feeling, Maybe it’s a kind of destiny, between Beita and me, between Indonesia friends and me.

-Summer, Chengdu Textile College
Today once more I have a very great day. In this Thuesday we have a full course in class room. I started my day with picked up my chinese friend to english class hold by English departement in KH 203 at 8pm. Today lecturer is Miss Dewi. She is very explicity. She teach us about to be confident if you speak in english. The teaching Method was very interesting, we divided into twelve group. After this session we’ve got 10 minutes of ice breaking. The lesson continued by discuss about the best issued. I thought that this course is very enjoyable, because I can speak english with other students from CDTC and english department. We also can express our opinion.
At 1pm after we attended English course and lunch we continued our course at SV 201. The course is about batik from time to time. This course was conducted by Miss Dewi. From philosophy and pattern of batik until application of batik cloth was interesting. I could more undertand about Batik Indonesia especially javanese batik. I could see that CDTC students also have more interest about Batik. I’m sure that they’re want wear batik. After the coure finished, we divided into three group to disscuss the paper. My group are consist by me with Zoe, Claudia with Hayley, aulia with Clorise, and Fatima with carol. At this time eventough out english skill not so well, we did our best to communicate with each other. I think that this is the main point of student exchange, to increase another culture, even there is a big gap. And the gap is language.
At 4.30pm in the evening, we went to guest house at kemuning street N53 to learn Saman dance. Saman dance is traditional dance from Aceh. I think learning Saman dance is pretty difficult, because we should sing and dance at the same time. But, CDTC student learnt very well. They could remembered every dance steps. Finally we finished our courses today. Even though I felt so tired, but I was happy. I spend my time guiding CTCD student to introduce Indonesian culture, especially in Yogyakarta region conducted by Vocational School Gadjah Mada University. I can’t wait to tomorrow, to another activity with CTCD students. I hope our relation will be long last for ever, although there’s a long distance separated us, but i’m sure fate can’t divided us.

We can know the culture of Indonesia in these places that we gone, and all of us love the country more!
-Cloris, Chengdu Textile College
Today we went to watch The Indonesian traditional silver production. The door to see the first has the national characteristics of the two faces, a man and woman is a national characteristics. Then enter, we see a thin silver, long a silver, through which the silversmith silverware meticulously, is not a feeling to the silver items but one child. Carefully take care of the spikes in the meticulous silver. I have seen many forming silver showroom, one is the result of the artisan workers and hard work. Later, we went to a beautiful beach, we play on the beach, taking pictures. The waves of the sea is very big, still cannot quench. The enthusiasm of everyone of us, every one of us was accompanied by his partner, buy snacks, chatting sitting on the beach, i like such activities, not only to relax himself, and make yourself and your partner have deeper understanding. I love the beach, I love Indonesia!

Day 6, Saturday, October 10, 2015
Today we have some activities in Student Exchange Program. In the morning, we have a paper project with Angela and Chennal, me and my partner, Summer, had not write anything yet, and I didn’t bring my laptop. Fortunately, I borrowed Fatima’s laptop to do our project, and we could do our project well. After lunch, we had a lecture with CDTC teachers (Sabrina and Claudia)in the big class which attended by many students from English department, Chinese department, and Tourism department of 2014. Unfortunately I left Claudia’s lecture because I had to accompany Sabrina to go to English Department Office, she had to get a WiFi connection to transfer her file into USB. That was a little complicated moment because of her device is not really capable for international usage. After attending CDTC lecture, we got back into dorm and practicing Saman dance. All was running well, Chinese students were so excited in practicing Saman dance, although at the first time they were not interested.
-Farah Nabila, English Department Vocational College UGM
Today, in the morning, me and my partner made English Paper homework, although both of us has different in languages, and also from different places, but, in order to finish our common goal, the teacher arranged the task seriously, we still insist on the completion of all.
In the afternoon, we listen to our teacher’s lecture. When we listen our Chinese teacher introduced Chengdu, China, suddenly I feel sad, miss my home, miss my home foods, miss friends, inexplicable sadness, perhaps because this is our first time to go overseas, and because of long time not to eat our favorite food, and also because of a lot of things, but, our life is not so? We learn to accept, learn to endure, learn to persevere, so that we will become more and more brave, our life will be more colorful.
In the afternoon, we learn the dance with unique characteristics, although we were very tired, but we very happy, because once again after our efforts, we started the dance with confused, and later, we did it! I love the dance, but we need to do it together, and would make the dance more perfect, highlighting the strength of unity, I hope, in the next few days, we would make it to be more better.

Day 7, Sunday, October 11, 2015
Today is a busy day,but I think it make sense to me.
We started a new day trip after we had the breakfast.First,we continued to finish the paper about the market. We compared Beringhario Market and Xipu food Market. It is very pleased of me to discuss with my partner, this is not only beneficial to communicate in English, but also allows us to better understand each other. After that ,we went to the factory of batik. We have also personally tried the batik pattern building section. Although previously I heard of in China over the batik cloth, but until today only know the dye on the cloth to wash away the wax. Batik by contact, so I understand the importance of the traditional culture of a nation, if you do not pay attention to the national culture, which is that the nation will lose features, just blindly follow someone else’s footsteps. This reminds me of today’s China in the garment piece, most people are quick to follow fashion culture, he lost the original style. In this regard, Indonesia is indeed better.
At noon, we have lunch in a Southeast Asian-style restaurant, a slight adjustment. Afternoon,we went shopping in the Beringhario Market that there are two stairs,so many special things of Indonesia sold. And I bought some souvenir for my friends, like mask, ginger tea, etc. The batik costume is sold in the first floor.I love the batik costume, but none of its suit me.What a pity! There is so crowded.
Why is Beringharjo Market so popular ?
Because the price of the stuffs is much cheaper and the things possess Indonesian style.
At last, thanks for giving us this chance to learn about Indonesia more.
-Carol Wen, Chengdu Textile College
Day 8, Monday, October 12, 2015
Today is October 12th. This morning we went to the teaching building to write paper. The topic is let me and my partner understand deeply each country’s history and culture. When I realize Indonesian traditional dance is different from china, I feel really moved, because Indonesian traditional dance has a lot of stories in it. We learned the Shaman dance in the afternoon,This dance makes people feel happy. This is a big challenge to me, because it has many difficult moves. But I also feel very happy. We changed many difficult moves with teacher’s singing. We had a very wonderful experience, this makes our life become more colorful.
-Yan Xue (Zoe), Chengdu Textile College
Today entered the countdown to the exchange, almost to complete the papers with partner , learning the Saman Dance has entered the end. See to all things are close to the full of the time, the heart is satisfied, feel the recent hard work and efforts have not been in vain. And partner together to write a paper with a better understanding of the Indonesian and Chinese cultures are different, the Saman Dance also let me know the nation’s folk customs, is so lively and simple. Day 9, Tuesday, October 13, 2015
Today I drove a student exchange program participants to visit the sultan’s palace. Although this is not the first time I came, but my arrival this time struck me as being more attractive. This is because in this visit I also seems to be a tour guide. Participants from China are very enthusiastic when it arrived at the sultan’s palace. They are very interested in architecture and the uniqueness of every building. Each building has its own story and its appeal so that they become interested to know more about the sultan’s palace. Even on one occasion they were surprised because they found one of the objects given by the Chinese government in the past. So, it makes them feel interested and able to enjoy the atmosphere of the sultan’s palace.
-Iwan Kuswanto, Tourism Department, Vocational College, UGM
